This technical methods seminar will focus on various approaches to form-making through casting. The course will be process-oriented and making-intensive. Students will be exposed to age-old, traditional methods of mold / formwork making and casting and will combine these methods with more contemporary, digital fabrication approaches. The material palette for the course will be wide, including, but not limited to, plaster, concrete, wood, foam, clay/slip (ceramics), glycerin and wax. Special attention will be paid to the relationships between formwork or molds and cast volumes; the space-generating potential of casting processes will be explored as a design tool.
