This EP Technical Methods / Senior Lab will focus on detailed design, research, drawing, modeling, fabrication, and construction of functional green building prototype components for a net-zero house for the 2015 Solar Decathlon Competition. This course will work closely in conjunction with a Graduate Design Development Studio run by Professor Martha Bohm. Students in ARC 404/598 will complete Construction Documents and Shop Drawings through to fabricated work, generally including full-scale mock-ups of wood & steel fabrication, small concrete pours, landscape installations, and the creation of outdoor rooms. The extent and types of actual fabricated systems will be negotiated with the Graduate DD Studio.
Possible specific systems to be investigated are as follows: Shading systems (both indoor and outdoor, movable and fixed); innovative mounting systems for various photovoltaic panel systems; kinetic thermal blanket systems for increasing night time R-value at glazing; a modular off-the-shelf radiant floor system customized to create additional thermal mass; an exterior rainscreen cladding system (possibly terra cotta); exterior deck & railing & bench systems; furniture & fixtures such as polished concrete sinks & countertops; and possibly, planter, greywater, & vertical gardening systems. Students will work with local professional advisors, as well as with students and faculty from SUNY ESF and the UB Engineering Department.
